Charles Darwin
Portrait of Charles Darwin – a heliogravure
Hanfstaengl collected portraits of illustrious personage in his famous »Corpus Imaginum«. The Hanfstaengl-anthology owns more than a thousand of these portraits. From 1860 on – one of the first at that time – he started to make photographic portraits. Hanfstaegl transferred these onto copper plates thus inventing the technique of Heliogravure. By means of that technology reproductions of the masterworks of art could be achieved for the first time. Hanfstaengl’s descendants founded branch establishments in London and New York. Based on the gems of the international musuems they built an own musuem of their best reproductions.
