Stieler
Joseph Stieler (1781-1858) lived in Wurzburg, Vienna, Poland and Italy before he came to Munich as a well known painter of portraits. In Munich he was promoted to a court painter of the bavarian king Ludwig I. (1786-1868) who ordered portraits of 39 beautiful ladies from the painter, the so called »Gallery of the beauties«. Stieler also painted Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
