Friedrich August Kaulbach (1850-1920) was a painter of  portraits and genre pictures. He studied in Nuremberg and became in 1886 director of the Munich  Academy of arts. Together with Lenbach and Stuck he was one of the so called Munich »painting sovereigns«.
