M.S. Merian

Maria Sibylla Merian was born in Frankfurt in 1647 and died in Amsterdam in 1717. Between 1699 and 1701 she travelled through Surinam (South America) and painted the most fascinating pictures of exotic butterflies, fruits and plants. After dhe returned to Nuremberg, where she married the painter J.A. Graff, she etched her paintings in copper for the use in entomologic and botanic text books.
