Painter and botanist Jean Francois Turpin (1775-1840) was born in calvados. Turpin painted over 6,000 watercolours showing botanic images. Like Redouté he was promoted by the famous french botanist Charles Louis L’Heritier. Amongst others he coworked with the scientists Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland. About 420 of his pictures were engraved in copper and published in an important teaching book about trees and bushes in 1833.
