Maria-Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), the daughter of the town plan drawer and copperplate etcher Mathhäus Merian travelled to Central America in the 17th century. She drew her famous images of  the transfromation of caterpillars into the most beautiful butterflies there. She engraved those so-called »Metamorphisses« in copper back in Germany. Maria-Sibylla Merian published her own flower text book in Nuremberg containing similar illustrations like those by Louis Tessier.
